1828 Dictionary
Homeschool Weblink Wednesday
Noah Webster wrote the first American dictionary. Over the years our English language has changed again and again. In many instances the definitions have become corrupt and no longer are defined as they once were. Noah Webster used the Bible as the foundation for his definitions. The American Dictionary of the English Language is in my opinion a great resource. I have yet to purchase one but there is a searchable version online which can be used free of charge. Here is an example of the difference in the definitions:
1828 Noah Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language
"Marriage"
The act of uniting a man and woman for life . . . Marriage was instituted by God himself . . . "Marriage is honorable in all . . ." Heb. 13.
1981 Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary
"Marriage"
. . . man and woman are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family . . . an intimate or close union
Do a few comparisons of your own and you may find yourself using the 1828 much more than you ever thought!
